Video Highlight of Gateway to Medicine
Upon admission to Tech, students and parents may opt to apply for the Gateway to Medicine program. There is a mandated pre-freshmen course in the summer between 8th and 9th grade where the students will take coursework to satisfy the NYSED requirements for Art & Music.
The program exposes students to many educational and cultural opportunities inside and outside the classroom. Gateway is the first high school program in New York City and one of the few in the nation to offer access to DNA laboratories with cutting-edge technology for students and faculty learning. Rather than the standard eight periods per day, Gateway students have nine. The program also emphasizes the development of reading and writing skills in joint English and Social Studies culminating in the AP World history exam in 10th grade*.
In order to be considered for admission, the eighth grade middle school student must have an excellent attendance and academic record (85 average or higher), must pass the Algebra regents and accelerate into Geometry, and must be able to secure supportive recommendations from both the middle school guidance counselor and either a math or science teacher.
