AP Biology: This lab based course will prepare students for the AP Biology Examination in May through which students may earn college credit. Topics include: Diffusion and Osmosis, Enzyme Catalysis, Mitosis and Meiosis, Plant Pigments and Photosynthesis, Cell Respiration, Molecular Biology, Genetics of Organisms, Population genetics and Evolution, Transpiration, Physiology of the Circulatory System, Animal behavior, Dissolved Oxygen and Aquatic Primary Productivity.Genetics: The genetics of bacteria, viruses and high organisms. Emphasis is placed on both the genetic and biochemical analyses of gene replication, heredity, mutation, recombination and gene expression. Comparisons of prokaryotic and eukaryotic genetics and regulation.Human Anatomy: The structure, development and evolution of vertebrates are studied. Laboratory work emphasizes the development of structure in vertebrates, using dissection specimens including the shark, cat, sheep brain, cow eye, pig kidney, and fetal pig.PLTW Biotechnical Engineering: The major focus of the Biotechnical Engineering course is to expose students to the diverse fields of biotechnology including biomedical engineering, bio-molecular genetics, bioprocess engineering, and agricultural and environmental engineering. Lessons engage students in engineering design problems that can be accomplished in a high school setting related to biomechanics, cardiovascular engineering, genetic engineering, agricultural biotechnology, tissue engineering, biomedical devices, human interface, bioprocesses, forensics, and bio-ethics.
