SCHOOL and Community Service
Brooklyn Technical High School encourages students to maximize their academic potential. In an effort to further prepare students for life, they are also challenged by contributing time and effort to their community and school. Thus, Brooklyn Tech has developed a service system in an effort to encourage students to build social skills, create a sense of responsibility, and help promote the development of their individual strengths.
 
Service to Brooklyn Technical High School is defined as ways in which students donate their time and effort to the school through participation in clubs, teams, or school-related events. In addition to service to the school, students are also required to volunteer their time for at least a minimum number of specified hours in an outside organization, or establishment.
 
To receive a Brooklyn Technical High School diploma, each student must meet the following minimum requirements by the end of their senior year:
I.     A minimum of 50 hours of community service outside of the school or through specified club activities.
    • Proof of these hours must be given in the form of a letter with the letterhead of the said organization in which the volunteering was done.
    • A copy of the letter must be handed in by the student to his/her guidance counselor.
II.    A minimum of 32 points earned through participation in Tech clubs, teams, and/or participation in
      designated school related events.
Points are earned as follows:
    • 8 points per term to all students in BETA, NHS, Student Government, student productions, stageworks, cheerleading, and PSAL teams.
    • 6 points per term to all students participating student leadership, who work on office squads, or compete in non-PSAL teams.
    • 4 points per term to all students who participate in other clubs not referred to above.
    • 2 points per term for participation in specified school events
This point distribution ensures that clubs and teams are recognized for the amount of work they do. A club advisor has the choice to give less than the maximum designated points to a student if the student did not fully participate in fulfilling the club’s obligations. This should encourage students to contribute a bigger effort to their respective clubs. Under this system, a student who participates in one club for four years (earning 4 points per term) will reach his/her minimum requirements by senior year. It is also feasible for students who can not be in a club for a term or even a year, for any of a various number of reasons, to make up their points by senior year.
 
While encouraging students to participate in school clubs and events, this system reduces the pressure of having to do many activities to reach a graduation requirement, creating a more relaxed and enjoyable experience, and encouraging students to choose an activity that suits their interests. It also gives students the opportunity to do volunteering, internships, or other related activities while still meeting their obligations to Brooklyn Tech.
NOTE:  The Community Service requirement will affect the Class of 2010 and all classes that follow. 
            The Classes of '07, '08, and '09 will not be affected.
